This work expresses my simple hope of improving my life through two related acts: finding love and de-cluttering my home. I aim to upturn the common human impulse to fill emotional voids with material goods by parting with furniture and furnishings I have grown attached to but no longer need. Using Craigslist, social media, and the gallery space, I invite interested buyers to view and purchase my belongings in this hybrid marketplace. Borrowing the attention generated by the show, I attempt to tell as many people as possible that I’m searching for the love of my life. Excerpts of my personals ad from online dating sites are on the gallery walls. With this project, I explore the themes of love and attachment to objects, loneliness and home design, determining value and letting go, and the function of the gallery in contemporary art practices.

CHINESE CHEST OF DRAWERS - was $3000, NOW $2750

This Chinese chest of drawers has traveled a path remarkably similar to my own. Created in Hong Kong, it traveled to San Francisco and spent decades in Iowa before coming to Minnesota. This elegantly ornate piece has been in my family for more than 40 years. It boasts 13 hand-carved scenes, each one unique. I think it’s made of elm. Owning this piece makes me feel I’m a thoughtful, contemplative person. This stately heirloom is priced at $2750. (40w 17.5d 52h)

ECLIPSE WHITE LEATHER LOVESEAT–Was $1800, NOW $1300

This loveseat is in pristine condition. I’ve cleaned and conditioned it regularly, even using Q-tips. Sitting is comfy and softly supported, especially with the armrests at just the right height for relaxing. Get the look of the classic Barcelona chair at 1/20 the price! I like these lounge chairs a lot but just don’t need them any longer. One features the original Frank & Son tag on the bottom. Movies: documentaries, Rushmore, Citizen Kane, Singing in the Rain, Godfather, To Live, Seven Samurai, Wizard of Oz, Brokeback Mountain, The Matrix, Devil Wears Prada, Gosford Park, Fargo, Brazil, A Room with a View, Crimes and Misdemeanors. (I also have a soft spot for sci-fi and superheroes.)

Music: Rufus Wainwright, Sondheim, American musicals, 80s pop, Adam Lambert, Philip Glass, John Adams, Beethoven and Mahler Symphonies, German Lieder, opera arias used in movies, and I’m addicted to NPR.

Food: I love food! I can’t think of anything I don’t eat! Ok, maybe I don’t do well with bugs, BUT I have eaten beetles (on a stick), worms (in an omelet), and scorpions (deep fried), all in China, of course. I’m eating more like a vegetarian these days.

Books: I like non-fiction like the museum catalog for Yoko Ono’s retrospective show from a few years back, Ursula LeGuin’s translation of the Tao Te Ching, and Thich Nhat Hanh’s Understanding Our Mind. Family photo albums. Right now, I’m reading Lewis Hyde’s The Gift.

Hot Spots: In town I like the St. Paul Farmers’ Market, Walker Art Center, the MIA, the University Club, Meritage, Heartland, Pho 79, Punch Pizza, and Mirror of Korea. Out of town I like the Boundary Waters, San Francisco, L.A., New York, Hong Kong, China, Paris, and Italy.

RED TOWER LAMP

I think this lamp is incredible! It’s designed by a famous Japanese architect. (I can’t remember who, so if you know, please tell me.) Such striking form, and the half-globe atop the tower can get very bright, but it’s always under control with the dimmer. It’s Western and modern, but doesn’t the red color hint at traditional Chinese? $500. (75h __ dia base)

When I moved to Iowa in the first grade my family became the third owner of the oldest Chinese restaurant in Des Moines, King Ying Low, which opened in 1917. When I was in high school, we sold that restaurant and opened another. I named it Chinatown. I remember I used to make the Mai Tais too strong, and they were often sent back. These chairs come from that restaurant. They’ve been re- upholstered, one pair in celadon and another in pewter. King Ying Low is now Fong’s Pizza, and Chinatown became a Mexican restaurant but is now empty. The symbol on the chair backs means “long life.” $150 ea. (17w 18d 36h, 18h to the seat)
