Hi there. Not your average Joe, I’m a creative rule-bender, ambitious dreamer, and loyal harmonizer. Tall, adaptable, and polite, I believe in quiet art, big nature, hard science, good people, and the mystery of life. Is this too cryptic for a personals ad?
I hope to find someone really put together, who values family, honesty, and spiritual and physical health. I find smarts and kindness super sexy. Maybe you too like cooking, going to performances and the movies, being with family at the holidays, and exploring the world, near and far. I’m at ease at your side at the orchestra or the ballpark, at a work event or dinner with friends, talking about anything from philosophy to the weather. You are active so we can hike, do yoga, play tennis, etc. You love what you do which can be anything from rocket science to palm reading to dancing in the ballet. If you do all three, can you please call me right away?
I was born in Hong Kong. We moved to Iowa when I was a kid, and I came to Minnesota for college and grad school. I like it here, but my family is in California and New York City, and I find every reason to visit them. I’m drawn to people who identify with what’s beyond Minnesota. And I don’t mean Wisconsin. (Nothing against Wisconsin.)
I live an artist’s life (with a good-paying and satisfying job), and I’m looking for someone who appreciates the unconventional. I’m as much Minnesota as Hong Kong and proud of both. My Chinese background is important to me, so if my crazy culture and family are not daunting but something you can enjoy, then we’re going to get along just fine. In work and life, I practice openness and peace, and I like to think I get a tiny bit better at it every day.
I may seem a bit serious here because I’m trying hard to work this online profile, but you should know I’m also proficient at playing flip, flirty, spontaneous, even impetuous when needed. With a glass of Barbera in hand, no something bolder—a big glass of Zin—a toast to LUV!
.........LOVE PROFILE (3/7)......... I'm Really Good At
I’m really good at coming up with just the right place to eat, shopping for bargains, adjusting to any social setting, pronouncing foreign languages, and connecting one idea across a long distance to another.
I’m NOT really good at keeping plants alive, completing things (except my last two relationships which I ended with aplomb!), understanding mechanical stuff and why they break, sorting papers, and there’s much more.
WHAT I’M DOING WITH MY LIFE
I’m building family closeness, studying the spirit, and I have a challenging and wacky job in the arts.
.........LOVE PROFILE (4/7)......... My Favorite Things
Movies: documentaries, Rushmore, Citizen Kane, Singing in the Rain, Godfather, To Live, Seven Samurai, Wizard of Oz, Brokeback Mountain, The Matrix, Devil Wears Prada, Gosford Park, Fargo, Brazil, A Room with a View, Crimes and Misdemeanors. (I also have a soft spot for sci-fi and superheroes.)
Music: Rufus Wainwright, Sondheim, American musicals, 80s pop, Adam Lambert, Philip Glass, John Adams, Beethoven and Mahler Symphonies, German Lieder, opera arias used in movies, and I’m addicted to NPR.
Food: I love food! I can’t think of anything I don’t eat! Ok, maybe I don’t do well with bugs, BUT I have eaten beetles (on a stick), worms (in an omelet), and scorpions (deep fried), all in China, of course. I’m eating more like a vegetarian these days.
Books: I like non-fiction like the museum catalog for Yoko Ono’s retrospective show from a few years back, Ursula LeGuin’s translation of the Tao Te Ching, and Thich Nhat Hanh’s Understanding Our Mind. Family photo albums. Right now, I’m reading Lewis Hyde’s The Gift.
Hot Spots: In town I like the St. Paul Farmers’ Market, Walker Art Center, the MIA, the University Club, Meritage, Heartland, Pho 79, Punch Pizza, and Mirror of Korea. Out of town I like the Boundary Waters, San Francisco, L.A., New York, Hong Kong, China, Paris, and Italy.
.........LOVE PROFILE (6/7)......... Six Essentials
Setting aside the real essentials, I’d say an expensive chef’s knife, New York City, my bathtub, my Carleton College education, China…and what the heck, let’s go with Buddha.
A few more things I really like while I’m on a roll: dim sum, chocolate ice cream, a cool breeze, strong hugs, the meditation bell, waterfalls, public radio, language class, and international airports.
